Itinerary
Day 1: Passau, Germany
Boarding time at 4.00 p.m. Located at the confluence of three
rivers, the Danube, the Inn
and the Llz, Passau has numerous interesting sites to visit. Stroll
through the narrow cobble stoned streets of the picturesque old town centre, listen to the bells of
Passau’s Gothic Town Hall. At 6.00 p.m. we cast off.
Day 2: Great Loop | Engelhartszell – Brandstatt approx. 45 km
Your first day’s cycle route begins with a ride through the classic
scenery of the ‘Great Loop’ Donauschlinge – one of the most
beautiful sections of the Danube. Explore the pristine countryside
of the Upper Danube Valley on the former towpath. Along the way you will encounter
sleepy villages and cozy cider taverns. In Austria’s only Trappist
monastery at Engelhartszell you can taste their delicious liquors
and cheese. The famous ‘Schlogener View’ provides a wonderful
panorama of the surrounding Austrian countryside. The boat welcomes
cyclists back on board while docked in the charming town of
Brandstatt.
Day 3: Brandstatt – Linz, approx. 24 km
The morning is cycling through pretty countryside and by noon you
will reach the Upper Austrian capital of Linz. Sample some weiner
schnitzel and sacher torte while exploring the old town.
Day 4: Mauthausen - Grein approx 36 km
Today's cycling is on a beautiful and varied route as you
explore the idyllic hinterland of the Strudengau by bike: the Celtic
village of Mitterkirchen, the baroque monastery of Baumgartenberg
and the romantic ruins of Burg Clam Castle. Finally comes the little
medieval town of Grein with its imposing castle.
Day 5: Tulln - Vienna approx 31 km
As you approach Vienna, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, you
find the 900 year old monastery of Klosterneuburg. Kahlenbergerdorf
with its wine taverns is near the pier where you meet your floating
hotel. After a stroll through the vineyards you can enjoy the
panoramic view over Vienna. In the afternoon there are optional bus
or walking tours through the historic centre of Austria's capital.
Day 6: Vienna - rest day
Discover Vienna's most beautiful attractions. You can take an
optional bus tour to experience Vienna’s most famous examples of
architecture:… the imperial Hofburg, St. Stephens Cathedral, the
gorgeous ‘Ring’-boulevard and the State Opera House. Take time to
relax in one or more of Vienna’s famous cafes for mouth-watering
sachertorte (chocolate cake) and perhaps attend a
classical concert (optional) at a famous Viennese palace..
Day 7: Wachau Valley round trip approx. 37 km
Your last biking day is a special highlight! A magnificent ruin looms
above the small Baroque town of Durnstein, while the blue spire of
the monastery church is a landmark of the renowned Wachau Valley. In
Weisenkirchen - the most important wine-producing village in Austria
- you can discover the famous Wachau wines.
Day 8: Passau
As you cruise back up the Danube enjoy the early morning sunshine as
the boat winds its way to Passau where you’ll disembark at
approx. 11.00 a.m. Connecting travel should be booked for 12.00 pm.
